I want to talk to you just a bit today about self-care. Have you ever wondered why self-care is so important?  One of my favorite phrases that has to do with self-care is that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

When you are busy taking care of everyone and everything around you, it can be exhausting! But if you keep pouring and pouring and pouring yourself out and you’re not doing anything to replenish that, you’re going to be exhausted and you’re not going to be able to take care of anybody else. It’s draining to be on all the time.

I’m thinking back to when  Christ was in the garden- the Garden of  Gethsemane and His disciples were there.  He asked them to pray with Him, to take that time to pray with Him. They were tired. They gave in to the fatigue and they weren’t able to do what Christ was asking of them because they were too exhausted to be able to stay up.

There are many times when we are sick or worn down because we’re not taking good care of ourselves, or if there’s just too much going on, we’re more susceptible to those attacks of the enemy. We’re more susceptible to giving in to fatigue or not only fatigue, but also other things like anxiety and depression, and all of that.  Those things worsen because our guard is down. When you are sick, when you’re tired,  when you’re overwhelmed, when you’ve just gotten too much on your plate, you don’t have the same coping skills that you would have otherwise. That is one of many reasons it is so important to make sure you’re taking care of yourself.

Make sure you are taking time to relax and regroup and spend time in God’s Word.

Give yourself permission to take care of yourselves because you truly can’t pour from an empty cup. You have to have something to be able to give out because if you’re not taking care of yourself first, you’re not gonna be in any shape to take care of anybody else. You’re more susceptible to the enemy’s attack, you’re more susceptible to that fatigue, and you’re not going to be as effective at anything you’re trying to do.

I hope that’s encouraging to you. I hope that helps you to give yourself permission to take care of yourself. Take that bubble bath, take time to take a walk in nature or read a book or spend time with a  friend. It’s okay to take care of yourself so you can take care of those around you and the responsibilities that you have in front of you.
