When we were in Florida, my boys learned about Coquina stone. They visited the Castillo De San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida and learned about the history of the fort and city.
As we were leaving, we chose two small pieces of coquina stone as souvenirs to remember their trip and what they learned.
Souvenirs are a great way to memorialize trips. We can look at them and remember the good experiences we’ve had. I love remembering how my boys enjoyed St. Augustine, because it’s one of my very favorite places.
In Joshua, we read about how he took stones from the Jordan river and piled them on the land so future generations could ask why they were there and hear the story of how God dried up the river so they could cross over.
Joshua 4
20 It was there at Gilgal that Joshua piled up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan River.
21 Then Joshua said to the Israelites, “In the future your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 Then you can tell them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea[c] when he dried it up until we had all crossed over. 24 He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.”
When God does wonderful things for us, we need to remember them. I think about how, when we read about the 40 years Moses led the Israelites in the desert, how quick the Israelites seemed to return to grumbling and complaining, even after incredible interventions by God. In reality though, we can all be like that. When God intervenes, we are grateful in the moment, then if we don’t do something to continually remember, we can get quickly get distracted again by … life.
One really good way to help yourself remember is to keep a journal of prayers and praise. I’ve started a post in the group as a virtual memorial, and I would love for you all to share your praises there. When you’re feeling down or overwhelmed, I want you to be able to go back and read some of the incredible things God does and be reminded. You can also do this on your own by journaling, or even by starting a bulletin board where you post your praises. However you decide to do it, I ask that this week, you make your breath prayer, “Heavenly Father, help me remember the incredible things You’ve done.”
When you’re feeling overwhelmed and need a reminder, or just as you begin and end each day, ask God to help you remember what He has done for you.
