Is your faith being tested?

If you’ve been facing one trial after another, you may be wondering how on earth going through all of those difficult things you’ve been going through could possibly be a good thing. Yet, we read in James chapter 1 verses 2- 4, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Pure joy? Wow. Not exactly the first thing we tend to think when we hit a string of things others may chalk up to bad luck. Last summer, we came home from vacation to the sound of rushing water, as our water heater had busted open and was flooding our kitchen floor. In the course of just a few weeks, we also had our refrigerator die, my websites were hacked four times before I could get them secured, my husband’s power steering went out, my car began leaking… the day I walked into my boys’ room to find that the roof had started leaking, I laughed. What else do you do at that point?

We’ve been through a lot of trials. Some have been much bigger than others, but I can definitely tell that God has been training me. He’s been putting me in situations where I had to exercise faith, and when we exercise, we get stronger. Last summer, I also ran a 5k for the first time ever. You know, I’ve never been athletic, so it was a huge deal for me. I started out walking, and then I just tried to run a little bit, and then a little bit more. Every time I went out, I wanted to quit, to be honest, and not try again. But, then I found myself feeling so determined to get out there and really try to run a little bit further.

My goal was just to be able to run the 5k without having to stop or walk any of it, and I did it. But, I didn’t get there by just showing up on the day of the 5k. It took a lot of testing of those muscles and my mindset. It took the trial runs and God giving me the strength to keep pushing forward.

If your faith is being tried now, consider it the gym for spiritual wellness. You have to work those faith muscles, because the more you use them, the stronger your faith becomes.  A stronger faith is always rewarding, I promise.
